Shakti Bhatt Award at Max Mueller Bhavan

Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan played host to the annual Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize 2016 event, hosted by poet Jeet Thayil in memory of his wife, Shakti Bhatt. The year’s winner (for 2016) was noted journalist and author, Akshaya Mukul for his critically acclaimed book “Gita Press and the Making of Hindu India”.


The evening begins with author and poet Jeet Thayil, also the curator of the shortlist, introducing the list followed by Judge Janice Pariat about the selection process. Thereafter winner Akshaya Mukul was in conversation with moderator Pragya Tewari, talking about the nature of research and the inspiration behind his book. .

The Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize, launched in 2008 in memory of young author Shakti Bhatt, is an initiative by Shakti Bhatt Foundation that celebrates new writing of the subcontinent by awarding a trophy and prize money.

The prize money of Rs. 2 lakhs and a trophy are offered by the Shakti Bhatt Foundation and by Priti Paul, director of the Apeejay Surendra Group, through the Apeejay Trust.
